- Lionsgate-led Series D round in February 2015
Keiretsu Forum’s Northern California chapter backed Telltale Games early, and the $40M Lionsgate-led Series D of February 2015 became the liquidity event through which those members realised their return.
A Lionsgate-led investment round, not an acquisition, delivered the exit

01
The company
Telltale Games was founded in 2004 in San Rafael, California, by a group of designers who had left LucasArts. The studio built its identity around episodic, choice-driven narrative games and became a major force in the genre with The Walking Dead (2012, winner of numerous Game of the Year awards), The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones, and later licensed properties including Minecraft: Story Mode and Batman. At its peak it was one of the most recognisable names in narrative gaming.
02
The investment
Keiretsu Forum’s Northern California chapter is on record as an early investor in Telltale Games. The company’s most significant later-stage capital event came on February 25, 2015, when Lionsgate led a strategic investment reported at roughly $40 million as part of Telltale’s Series D round — structured as a content partnership as much as a financing, with both companies agreeing to co-develop episodic games from Lionsgate film and television properties and television content from Telltale’s game franchises.
03
The journey
An important clarification on how this deal is often labelled: Lionsgate did not acquire Telltale Games. Multiple contemporaneous sources (Global Venturing, The Drum) describe the February 2015 deal as a roughly $40 million strategic investment in Telltale’s Series D round, explicitly structured to keep Telltale independent while the two companies co-developed content — mirroring similar gaming partnerships Lionsgate struck around the same period with Kabam, Next Games and Starbreeze Studios. Any framing of this as “acquired by Lionsgate” does not match the public record; the accurate framing is a Lionsgate-led investment round that also served as Keiretsu Forum’s exit event.
A note on the multiple: a Keiretsu Forum article on recent member exits attributes a 45x return specifically to this Telltale exit — the same multiple that is elsewhere attributed to Immunomic Therapeutics. Public sources do not settle whether these are two genuinely separate 45x outcomes or a mix-up between the two companies in one set of source materials, so the figure is presented here as reported by Keiretsu Forum rather than independently verified.

04
The outcome
Telltale Games remained an independent company after the Lionsgate investment; it did not become a Lionsgate subsidiary. The studio continued operating and releasing games for several more years before ceasing operations in September 2018 amid financial difficulties — an outcome unrelated to the 2015 round, which had already given early investors their exit years earlier. The Telltale brand and select intellectual property were later acquired out of that shutdown by a separate, unrelated company, LCG Entertainment, in 2019.
05
Network Impact
For early Keiretsu Forum investors the Lionsgate round functioned as a liquidity event: a Keiretsu Forum article on recent member exits, grouped alongside the network’s exit from Boston Heart Diagnostics, credits the Lionsgate investment as the mechanism through which early Telltale investors realised their return.
That is a meaningful, if less commonly discussed, form of angel-network impact. Keiretsu Forum’s seed and early-stage capital gave Telltale the runway to become a studio large and well known enough to attract a major strategic partner, and that partner’s capital infusion created a secondary opportunity for early shareholders to sell down their position — well before any eventual acquisition or wind-down of the company.
